A British man who ran a marina for superyachts in St Lucia has been found dead at his home.

Local news media have named him as Robert ‘Bob’ Hathaway, a well-known and reportedly a much-loved figure in the Caribbean superyacht fraternity.

Hathaway’s body was discovered by a neighbour on Sunday at around midday.

Police have confirmed that they are treating the death as homicide although they are awaiting the results of a post-mortem examination.

A spokesman for police said: “The body of a British national was found where he lived in Grand Riviere, Gros Islet.

“We are treating his death as a homicide.”

“We will be getting in touch with his family in the UK. We don’t yet know if he has any next of kin on St Lucia.”

Hathaway bought land in Margiot Bay and sailed to St Lucia from the UK in 2001.

A spokeswoman at London’s  Foreign Office said on Monday: “Our staff are in contact with the authorities in St Lucia following reports of the death of a British man.”

Friends have been posting messages of sadness and disbelief on social media.
