Lürssen has reported falling victim to a cyber attack over the Easter weekend.

A spokesman for the Bremen-based shipyard group confirmed that it was a ransomware attack. A Ransomware attack comes when hackers penetrate the company’s computers with malware, with access usually gained via ‘phishing’ emails.

So far, and due to the ongoing nature of the investigation, neither the company nor the investigating police in Bremen have been able to say exactly what happened at Lürssen, whether a ransom is being demanded and whether there is any evidence of the perpetrators.

A statement from Lürssen, it was said that “all necessary protective measures were taken immediately”. According to by Buten un Binnen, the regional magazine of Radio Bremen, the shipyard was largely idle over Easter.
