What sort of clients do you advise?
Our core focus is in advising UHNWIs in their buying, selling, building and financing of superyachts, as well as all the ancillary aspects of superyacht ownership. We also act for lenders and other industry professionals and our team consists of finance, registration, insurance and employment experts.
How did you end up in superyacht law?
A quirk of fate by all accounts. Prior to qualifying as a solicitor I was an Economics student, involved in various small commercial enterprises and an avid globetrotter. After studying law I joined Hill Dickinson with an open mind, spent some time working in the Singapore office before returning to the Yachts team in London – and the rest as they say is history.
What makes a good superyacht lawyer?
A keen eye for detail, pragmatism and a sense of humour (I am still hopeful for the latter). The ability to overcome obstacles constructively is fundamental; our clients appreciate our dedication to their very passionate cause. Good working relationships with industry peers is also very helpful.
What do you most like about your job?
The unique and different nature of each transaction – no two days are ever the same.
What one piece of advice would you give to potential yacht buyers?
In second hand purchases, take time and care to perform a thorough condition survey and sea trial. With new builds it is important to surround oneself with a robust team of advisors who will represent your interests throughout the entire construction process.
