The S501 Hybrid is the second hull in Tankoa Yachts’ 50m series.

The 50m Tankoa S501 Hybrid M/Y Bintador, from Genoa-based Tankoa Yachts, is the latest superyacht scheduled to make its debut at the 2019 Monaco Yacht Show in September.

The second hull in the superyacht builder’s 50m series, the vessel is powered by twin MTU 8V4000M54 (895 kW) and two 300 kW electric motors fed by two 250 kW variable-speed generators. The hybrid propulsion system enables four modes of operation: Diesel-electric (DEM), hybrid, traditional mode and booster mode.

In DEM mode, the electric motors are fed by two variable-speed generators. These enable a speed of up to 10.5 knots and a maximum range of 4,900 nautical miles with the main engines off. This mode is said to offer significant fuel savings and reduced noise levels.

Using the hybrid mode, one of the two main engines’ shafts generates the electrical power to run the second electric motor for propulsion and guest  needs. The two diesel generators are switched off during navigation. This configuration delivers a range of 4,000 nautical miles when cruising at 12 knots.

Range of 4,000 nautical miles

In traditional mode the superyacht uses both main diesel engines for propulsion to reach a speed of 16.5 knots. A diesel generator supplies the vessel’s guest needs. Under this configuration the variable speed generators self-adjust their rotation speed to the required load.

Booster mode enables the yacht to reach a top speed of 18 knots. This is achieved by both main engines and generators supplying power to the two electric motors and feeding the guest accommodation loads.

Designed by Francesco Paszkowski, the vessel is based on a similar plan to the first in Tankoa’s 50m series: Vertige. But the latest model is distinguished by its hybrid propulsion system and different cabin layout and deck features.

The interior design, by Francesco Paszkowski Design in collaboration with Magherita Casprini, is said to combine “light and modern tones with an abundance of natural materials”.  Interior features include: a saloon, dining room, galley, pantry, toilet and a master suite, complete with office and lounge fitted with a fold-down terrace to starboard and a large openable window to port.

Gym and beach club

S501 Hybrid’s lower deck is equipped with a gym and beach club, two VIP cabins with king-size beds and two guest cabins with twin berths, one with a Pullman berth, plus crew quarters and service areas.

On the main deck, the cockpit is fitted with a super-sized sun bed, U-shaped sofa, coffee tables and bar with fold-down bulwarks for more floor space and better sea views.

The foredeck features a touch-and-go helipad and storage for five e-bikes. A tender and jet-skis are stowed on the deck.

The Monaco Boat Show takes place from Wednesday September 25th to Saturday September 28th. Among the other vessels making their debut at the show will the latest addition to the Damen Yacht Support Range – the 46m Joy Rider – launched earlier this month at Dutch yacht builder Amels & Damen’s yard in the Netherlands.
