Recruitment in the sun: YPI CREW is based at Port Vauban, Antibes, South of France.

Luxury yacht recruitment agency YPI CREW has acquired the recruitment division of Edmiston and is taking on all its crew-placement business.

From January 1st, Edmiston transferred its recruitment team of four to YPI CREW, taking the combined team to a total of 16 staff members.

Laurence Lewis, YPI CREW President, told Superyacht Investor: “The yachting industry is constantly evolving and so is the recruitment market. In order to meet the complex needs of our clients and candidates, recruitment companies need manpower so consolidation is inevitable and more is probably to come.”

‘Soft skills recruiters’

Recruitment is not a commodity purchase and quality recruiters are increasingly essential in today’s sophisticated market, said Lewis. “Clients pay for the soft skills recruiters bring to the table, which technology cannot do. With a team of 16 we are confident we can provide the best service to clients and candidates alike.”

Based in Antibes, in the South of France, the recruiter fills vacancies in a wide range of roles from captains and chief engineers to stewards, stewardesses and deckhands. A Lloyd’s Register audited business, YPI CREW works in accordance with Maritime Labour Convention 2006 to ensure that seafarers have access to an efficient and well-regulated recruitment and placement system. The business is listed on the French national register for seafarer recruitment and placement services.

Core business of yacht brokerage

Jamie Edmiston, CEO of Edmiston, said: “YPI CREW are the world leading crew recruitment division and I know they will nurture and grow the Edmiston crew division, ensuring the team and clients receive the level of service they require.” Edmiston added that the acquisition would enable Edmiston to focus on its core business of yacht brokerage, charter and management.

The acquisition comes just over a year since YPI CREW joined the commercial shipping giant the Schulte Group. The ship-owning and large-ship management business has 20,000 seafarers under contract and operates offices in 29 countries.

Meanwhile, in 2018 YPI CREW noted that yacht crew were moving onto bigger vessels, with the largest percentage of crew positions on offer being on vessels over 71m.
